Definitive Technology DI 5.5R In-Ceiling Speakers
Definitive Technology DI 5.5R speakers feature near-invisibility thanks to their small diameters, hidden flange design, and low profile micro-perf grilles. They are as easy to install as traditional flanged flush-mount speakers, and dont require custom sheetrock/spackle skills to install yet they are practically invisible. The DI 5.5R grille is a mere 7-3/8 inches (18.62 centimeters) in diameter, about the same visible size as competitive nominal 5-1/4-inch in-ceiling speakers.
Definitive’s Advanced Technologies
The Disappearing In-Wall models feature Definitive’s most advanced technologies such as Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) mid/woofer drivers and pivoting Pure Aluminum dome tweeters for spectacular audio performance far beyond traditional flush-mount speakers.
Definitive’s exclusive Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) driver technology permits these new flush mount speakers to deliver more bass output and dynamic range than larger drivers. For example, the DI 5.5R’s 5-1/4″ driver has the output, bass and dynamics of a 6-1/2″ traditional speaker.
Great Sound for Everyone in the Room
With in-ceiling speakers, listeners are almost always “off-axis.” You rarely sit right under an in-ceiling speaker; usually the speaker is at a 30, 45 or even 60-degree angle to the listener. We’ve engineered DI Series speakers to disperse sound over a very wide area so that the sound is well-balance and natural regardless of where you are relative to the speakers. BDSS technology drivers, aimable tweeters as well as the specially contoured and textured AeroRing™ around the driver all contribute to the wide angle dispersion and superior coverage capability of the DI Series models.
Definitive Technology DI 5.5R Rough-In Brackets
The DI Series rough-in brackets were custom designed from the ground up to be easy to install. The “arms” are metal mesh and can easily be attached to wood or metal studs using nails, dry-wall screws, or construction staples. The arms easily detach and can be positioned at various points around the bracket to accommodate unusual stud/joist locations. The center ring is heavy gauge steel that will not bend or break with rough handling and sloppy drywall cutting by subcontractors. The convenient wire tie loop is scored to allow easy snap off once the speaker is installed.
The center rings are fabricated from heavy duty painted stamped steel. There are no sharp metal edges to cut an installer’s hands and they are ultra rigid, so that when drywall is laid over and cut the brackets will not bend or break. The center ring requires a 6.375″ diameter cutout.
The metal mesh mounting arms snap onto the center ring in a variety of positions to cover almost any installation. The wings can be attached with nails, staples or screws; and can be bent and easily trimmed with tin snips. They are also thin enough to make stud notching simple. The wire tie loop easily breaks away when the speaker is installed.
